Maybe it’s Maybelline

We all (those old enough that is) remember the 90’s commercial for Maybelline beauty products “maybe she’s born with it, maybe it’s Maybelline.” Yes, Evan, we remember, so what? I’m glad you asked!

You see, in society it is commonly argued that homosexuality isn’t a moral issue as those individuals who partake in the gay lifestyle are born that way. The problem is, this is a red-herring argument. You see, in philosophy and logic, a “red-herring” argument is one which distracts from the actual issue, and having “victoriously” defeated that unnecessary argument, the speaker claims victory.

You see, the Bible is quite clear on God’s view of homosexuality, both in the Old Testament and New: Leviticus 18:22, Genesis 18:20-21, Romans 1:26-27, and 1 Timothy 8-10 for example. The Bible plainly condemns homosexuality as sinful, being against God’s will and purpose in creation.

“But they can’t help it, they’re born that way!” I do not deny that as some in Christian circles try to. We are all born in this fallen world with a sin nature. “Indeed, I was guilty when I was born; I was sinful when my mother conceived me” (Psalm 51:5). We are all born sinful with every inclination of our hearts set on evil all the time.

It makes no difference being “born gay,” of being inclined to same-sex attraction. Just as sexual sin is sinful regardless of our being born with strong sexual desires as heterosexuals. “Well, I steal because I was born this way!” Good luck with the judge with that defense. Scripture is quite clear “Don’t you know that the unrighteous will not inherit God’s kingdom? Do not be deceived: No sexually immoral people, idolaters, adulterers, or males who have sex with males, no thieves, greedy people, drunkards, verbally abusive people, or swindlers will inherit God’s kingdom” (1 Corinthians 6;9-10).

Now, acknowledging that inspite of societal norms” (truly un-normal) insisting that homosexuality is not sin, it indeed is. So what are we to do, Evan? The same as we do with all lawbreakers, of God’s will, including ourselves: preach repentance and faith in Christ Jesus! It’s not to downplay the struggle that must be had in denying one’s sexual urges. I struggled strongly with sexual immorality for a long time, by Gods grace those bonds have been abolished in Christ.

I, we, all of us as believers are to love. We are to hate sin, preach the truth of Gods word and offer hope and encouragement to all seeking to honor God in their lives. We do not hate homosexuals, we love and pray as believers that they may be freed from their bondage and come to the Lord in true repentance, faith and experience the abounding forgiveness, joy, and freedom in Christ Jesus.

We are indeed “born with it,” and by the grace of God we are forgiven in Christ and can find freedom!

“Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus, because the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and death. What the law could not do since it was weakened by the flesh, God did. He condemned sin in the flesh by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh as a sin offering, in order that the law’s requirement would be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. For those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit have their minds set on the things of the Spirit” (Romans 8:1-5).

Dear Lord, we pray, Father that we may love, preach the truth of your word and help those struggling. Give us your heart for sinners like ourselves; those in bondage to the flesh. May we show Christ’s love in abundance, yet not distort your word in seeking to be “less-offensive.” All to your glory, in Christ’s holy name. Amen
