There exists in modern evangelicalism a missing component. The gospel is presented, the cure, but the sickness isn’t pointed out. sin. Using the law as the means of mirroring its living in all of us. We get decent reception with the good news, all “that talk about sin and God’s wrath toward sinners is so negative!”
The Gospel truly is beautiful, it is only fully understood in light of the condemnation brought by transgressions. The law reveals sin, brokenness and closes all boasting and arrogant mouths before a holy, sin-hating God. For “the law brings death” (Romans 4:14). By the law we become conscious of sin. All are brought to humble acknowledgment of our utter depravity and our hopeless standing before a holy God in whom no wickedness dwells (Romans 7:7-13).
We do no one a favor by “softening the blow” of the gospel, of dumbing down the message of the cross! The cross satisfied the Father’s wrath which was earned and due for mans willful rebellion.
Yes, God loves us, yes, Jesus died for us: absolutely, but we must explain why! We have rampant false converts because we downplay sin, its effects and outcome. Our Lord who loved and loves absolutely, preached, “‘the time has come’ he said. ‘The kingdom of heaven has come near. Repent and believe the good news!'” (Mark 1:15).
We’re not doing favors taking the “bite” out of the cross…He hung where we should have, He suffered what we were to! God took/takes sin very seriously as the reality of the cross painfully, ponderously, and beautifully explains. Preach law and Gospel: honor the king, and trust the savior to convert, not our cleverness or the attractiveness of our message!
“For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel–not with wisdom and eloquence, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power ‘For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written:
‘I will destroy the wisdom of the wise;
The intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate.
Where is the wise man? Where is the scribe? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since in the wisdom of God, the world through its wisdom did not know Him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe.
Jews demand signs and Greeks search for wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles,but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.
For the foolishness of God is wiser than man’s wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than man’s strength” (1 Corinthians 1:17-25)
Father God, we love and adore you! We praise and thank you for sending Jesus as savior and Lord. In the cross we see the seriousness of sin, it’s cost, your love and unmerited mercy towards sinners. May we not dumb down your message. We only plant seeds, You bring forth fruit and the harvest. May we preach the fullness of the gospel, to your glory, honor, and praise. Trusting in you to accomplish all reception and acceptance. In Jesus’ holy name. Amen.
