It’s common to hear that we have souls. Or spirit within us. The thought is we’re physical beings having an immaterial soul. There’s a problem with this however, it’s a misunderstanding, a confusion of priority.
We are eternal spirits inhabiting a material body. Why does that matter, Evan, aren’t you “cutting hairs” here? No I am not, thank you. You see we are eternal, created by our loving, God to live forever. We are not merely physical beings.
God breathed life into inanimate earth and thus gave man life. We are only here for a time. Indeed, our spirit’s, our being will live on regardless of inhabiting our flesh and blood bodies.
No, I’m not preaching some new age nonsense! Having the focus of this reality we realize what’s important and what is secondary. We need not obcess over this life as it is not everything. We are but on a pit stop here on earth, our eternal destination being chosen for after we depart from our physical bodies.
And update, all of us will indeed live forever. We will be resurrected into our bodies, the righteous in, Christ into glorified new bodies, free of sins effects and live with our loving, Savior and King Jesus Christ. To those who deny Jesus’ atoning work, you will have chosen to pay the penalty of sin yourself and be resurrected onto eternal punishment and separation from the, Creator.
This life is not all of the story, it’s but a blip. With really good health insurance and clean living, we’re looking at 90 years tops. The hereafter is of much greater importance! Live your life in view of eternity: accept Jesus’ salvation, repent and believe the good news! Build up your treasures in heaven, trust in Jesus and put off being consumed with this passing world.
“Then the LORD God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being” (Genesis 2:7).
“For, “All people are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall. “but the word of the Lord endures forever.” And this is the word that was preached to you.(1 Peter 1:24-25).
“And inasmuch as it is appointed for men to die once and after this comes judgment, so Christ also, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time for salvation without reference to sin, to those who eagerly await Him” (Hebrews 9:27-28).
“When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the angels with Him, He will sit on His glorious throne. All the nations will be gathered before Him, and He will separate the people one from another, as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. He will place the sheep on His right and the goats on His left.
“Then the King will say to those on His right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world” (Matthew 25:31-34).
“So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal” (2 Corinthians 4:18).
Father, God, we praise and thank you for the salvation found in Your blessed Son Jesus Christ. We are spirits inhabiting flesh. May we not forget that, may we have an eternal as opposed to temporal perspective. Let us come to, Jesus that we may live. Help us to passionately preach the gospel, and to build up our treasures in heaven. Please make us not be enthralled with this world as it is passing away. Keep our eyes on, Jesus in whose name we pray. Amen.
