The love and mercy of our, God is beautiful and truly incredible. With that said, in addition, coupled with our, Lord’s love is His holiness.
God is ultimately and totally holy, as such He has wrath: righteous indignation toward transgressions, and transgressors. And rightfully so.
These two characteristics of the, Godhead in total, are played out in the beauty of the cross of, Christ. The, Father’s wrath towards sin, and sinners poured out on the perfectly righteous, Sinless Son of God (penal-substitutionary-atonement).
Remember, it’s “the fear of the Lord that is the beginning of knowledge but fools despise wisdom” ( proverbs 1:7).
The true gospel is amazingly comforting, yet in its embrace you must embrace your total wickedness and see yourself in your actual “worthiness:” none at all without, Christ.
As the message of the cross is so sobering and “humiliating” with regards to seeing our actual brokenness, this makes the gospel very offensive. For the “cross is foolishness to those who are perishing” (1 Corinthians 1:18).
“What do you mean I’m broken and need to repent, and trust someone else?!” Offensive to the max: an utter slap in the face to “self esteem,” “self worth,” and our proposed “goodness.”
True faith results in fruit, in humility and newness of life. May we preach, Christ until He comes, “offensiveness” and all.
Father, God, much praise and many thanks for your unmerited mercy and love shown to us in, Christ Jesus. Thank you for opening our eyes. Please work mightily to bring people to faith. Please use us to preach the gospel without watering-down Your message. It’s offensive to modern ears but the only truth that saves. In, Jesus’ holy name. Amen
